Watch #4 is a verge watch by Cairns of Providence, Rhode Island. There is no documentary evidence that this watch was
actually made in America, there is very strong evidence in the watch itself that it is of American manufacture. This watch was the subject
of an article in the NAWCC Bulletin in June, 2002 where it is fully described. It is likely, but not certain that this watch preceded the
work of Goddard in Shrewsbury, which would make it the first known watch of American manufacture. The very first well-documented watches to have been made in the United
States are those by Luther Goddard. The Cairns article suggests some possibly earlier watch makers, but it is clear that Luther Goddard and
several of his apprentices were the first to manufacture American watches in significant volume. Front, Back, Inner front, Dial, Movement, Edge view of movement, Close-up view of movement, Inside inner case, Inside outer case, Close-up of case joint |
