S# 3,840 - A second helical hairspring movement, this one with gilt damascened finish. S# 3,840 is the latest known example of its breed, and the only one with spun-in, rather than screwed-down jewel settings. The surface finish of this movement was nearly as experimental as the escapement and plate layout. The earliest damascened Howard watch known is S# 1,105, also with helical hairspring, but damascening did not become commonplace on Howard (or other American) movements until after S# 30,000. Howard was most likely the first American watch manufacturer to experiment with damascening. The extraordinarily well-preserved original 18K open face case of this movement is marked "B. & Co." Curiously, the original dial is unsigned.
