The C. H. Hulburd is Elgin's official entry in the Prestige Watch competition. The grade is named after the president of the company. The Hulburd is a special size and requires a unique case. Some have been seen in 12 size Lord Elgin cases, but these are certainly recased examples. Elgin advertised that each example was unique and they did produce a large number of case, dial and hand combinations. A total of 8,000 examples were made between 1916 and 1928.

The bridge design is unique to the Hulburd as is the finish and the form of the whiplash regulator. It appears that Elgin wanted this watch to be as different as possible from their regular line of product at the time.
