Elgin produced four 17 jewel high grade watches in the 1890's and early 1900's. These watches were the equivalent of the 21 jewel watches that were rarely marked Lord Elgin. On the 21 jewel models the winding wheels are very highly polished and dished in the center. The 17 jewel watches have highly polished and damaskeened winding wheels that have been called the "lace doily" pattern. The four "lace doily" watches are the grade 155 HC, 161 OF, 243 HC and 246 OF. The 155 and 161 are 3/4 plate and were produced first. The 243 and 246 are 3 finger bridge models as are the 21 jewel cousins the 156 and 162. Elgin only produced 16,000 of all the "lace doily" watches. 6000 grade 155, 4000 grade 161, 4000 grade 243 and 2000 grade 246. |
