The Elgin National Watch Co. was the first major spin off from the American Watch Company in Waltham, Mass. Eventually they succeeded in becoming the most prolific of all the jeweled watch manufacturers. Elgin is second only to Waltham in the number and quality of high end watches. The Elgin 21 jewel convertibles in Grade 72 and Grade 91 are arguably the finest watches ever produced in the United States in any significant quantity. During the formative years of Elgin, Charles S. Moseley was the driving genius behind both the machinery and the watch designs. I consider the Frances Rubie and the two convertible models to be his finest work in watch design.
