This 12 size example of the Waltham Howard 3/4 plate is interesting because of the steel escape wheel and the presence of the H prefix on the serial number. The contracts and the Waltham records indicate that probably 120 of these were made in hunting case configuration and another 180 as open face. However, the other 7 examples all omit the H prefix and have brass escape wheels.

The serial number H866830 corresponds to the Waltham serial number 12,066,830 from the run 12,066,801 to 12,066,920. The open face examples are in the run 12,066,921 to 12,067,000. In both cases the Howard serial number substitutes "H8" for "120."

The dial was originally marked Howard, but it has been erased. The small bridge may also have been erased and re-engraved. If it was, the re-engraving also included redoing the damaskeening which was not usually done.

The case on this watch is very tight and appears to be original. It is marked "The K.W.C.Co. Guaranteed 14K .585 Fine" with the serial number 5465377.
