Fairy Lamps
|
|
Lamps, Lime lamp, Cranberry lamp, Shades, Shades stacked, Cricklite mark, Fairy mark, Base bottoms, Cricklite base bottom, Cricklite base top These two lamps were bought at Portobello on our first trip to England in 1968. I was given the hard sell on the cranberry lamp by the stall owner and bought it. About an hour later I came back and the owner was gone but the assistant was there. I bargained hard to buy the lime colored lamp for the same price I had paid for the fancier cranberry lamp. I was successful, but I finally figured out that it was very likely the cranberry was a reproduction or "much later" production. The lime lamp with the much simpler Fairy base is undoubtedly original and I am pretty sure the assistant was in hot water for selling it. By tradition these lamps were used by Victorian children to find their way to bed in the evening. The glass is Nailsea glass with the typical loops. The lime shade is a bit smaller than the cranberry shade as can be seen in the picture with them stacked. The finish on the edges of the lime shade is much finer than that on the cranberry shade. |
